About Lauren Small Children's Center at Dignity Health - Memorial Hospital
The Lauren Small Children’s Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital is the first comprehensive pediatric program in Kern County and is fully approved by California Children’s Services. This children's center includes the Robert A. Grimm Children’s Pavilion for Emergency Services, the only dedicated pediatric emergency department between Los Angeles and Madera; a 31-bed Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for premature or seriously ill newborns; an eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU); and a 35-bed Pediatric Unit with around the clock in-house pediatricians, known as hospitalists.

High Risk Infant Follow-Up Program
A high-risk infant follow-up program is designed to provide follow-up monitoring and care for infants born with a high risk of disability or disease. This program will ensure early detection allows to timely intervention, so the child has the best chance of growing and developing normally.
Neonatal Intensive Care
A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a special care nursery designed to care for newborns born at an early gestational age or full-term infants that require close monitoring or intravenous antibiotics after birth.
Pediatric Acute Care
Pediatric acute care is a branch of healthcare that is focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of acute diseases, disorders, and injuries of infants, children, and adolescents up to the age of 18.
Pediatric Intensive Care
Pediatric intensive care is a unit in a hospital (PICU) that is dedicated to the care of critically ill or injured infants, children, and adolescents up to the age of 18. This care can include interventions such as IV fluids and medications , breathing support, and extensive surgery.
Pediatric Emergency Services
Pediatric emergency services are services that provide care for medical emergencies that occur in infants, children, and adolescents up to the age of 18. These emergencies can be due to illness or injuries that result in symptoms such as a high fever dehydration, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, and difficulty breathing.
